We talked to Chris Thompson at Orbital Comics about the success of the Walking Dead which is swiftly moving from cult to mainstream TV. It is a zombie apocalypse story which follows a group of survivors lead by police officer Rick Grimes. Critics have praised it most notably for its character development and special effects.
In this video Chris explains how it evolved from a comic and graphic novels to a TV series, and why it appeals to so many people.
The TV series has roughly followed the format of the graphic novel, at least to begin with. Chris explained: “There are some notable exceptions, such as the character Daryl Dixon, which was never in the comics and they vowed never will be. But then there are scenes such as the prison… which are direct lifts from the comics.” He adds, “It’s really something you can follow in both mediums, and get something new out of each.”
