Too much lycra in London
10th December 2014

The Mayor and Transport for London say they want to "de-lycrafy" cycling.

In response to a study which reveals most cyclists in London are white, middle aged men in employment, Boris and TfL wants to change the image of cycling and are encouraging more people to take part.

According to the study, 82 per cent of members of the Cycle Hire Scheme in London are male and 88 per cent are white.

The new plans for a cycle superhighway hope to encourage more Londoners to get peddling - and particularly to get older people, disabled people and ethnic minorities to take to two wheels.

Transport for London admit the popularity of cycling culture has caused many pedestrians to feel intimidated by those on bikes and are working to change this.

Evening Standard's Transport Editior, Matthew Beard discusses this further on Headline London.
