‘Great shame’ more people in London can’t speak English says Boris Johnson

The Mayor of London today told LBC radio it was a “great shame” that many people in London can’t speak English.

Boris Johnson said those moving to the UK from abroad should “do as the Romans do”.

He stressed he was speaking about people working in public services, saying he was “amazed by reports that people cannot make themselves understood in English in this country to people working in the NHS… This is completely wrong.”

He then added: "I think that we should have a culture in this country that if you come here, you do as the Romans do, you learn English and you speak English."
