The London Assembly: in need of reform?

A debate is being held at 6.30pm this evening about whether or not the London Assembly is effective enough or in need of reform.

‪Speaking at the assembly today alongside Darren will be Professor Nirmala Rao OBE, author of Reshaping City Governance and Governing London, Sir Merrick Cockell, Conservative Councillor, Professor Tony Travers, Director, LSE London and David Lammy, MP for Tottenham and a candidate to be London Mayor.

‪It has been argued that the London Assembly does not have adequate powers to achieve its purpose, which is to be an effective check on the Mayor’s authority.

‪Questions over the Assembly’s future have steadily been growing louder as many wonder whether it can justify its position or whether another body must take over its functions.
