Rihanna claims legal victory over Topshop

Rihanna has won a legal battle against Topshop.

She challenged the retail giant after a T-shirt with her image on it was sold without her permission.

The victory makes it the first successful celebrity case of its kind. Judges ruled that Topshop marketing the item without the star's approval constituted “passing off”, which is the unauthorised use of a personal image.

London Live spoke to Intellectual property lawyer Matthew Dick for details of the case, including why this ruling may be seen as controversial, given it is a grey area legally.
