Junior Doctors walk out causing “unparalleled disruption” to NHS

Junior doctors have been staging what’s been called the most disruptive strike in NHS history.

Young medics in London are feeling the hurt of their salary the hardest.

A 27-year-old trainee anaesthetist, who works at Whipps Cross Hospital in east-London said she can barely afford food or using the tube into work – and one of her colleagues has already started using foodbanks.

Industrial action is running for four days and around 50,000 junior doctors in England are taking part.

The members of the BMA union are demanding a 35% pay rise and better patient safety.

The BMA want “pay restoration” because junior doctors have had 15 years of below-inflation wage rises.

It’s thought  a quarter of a million appointments and operations have been – or are set to be cancelled.

Health Secretary Steve Barclay has been accused of not bothering to table talks to hear the demands of the junior doctors.

He’s insisted the pay rise is unreasonable and constructive talks can start when the 35% rise is dismissed as a starting point.
