Liberal Democrats' Sarah Olney wins Richmond Park by-election

Sarah Olney has won the Richmond Park by-election in a shock victory over the constituency's former MP Zac Goldsmith.

The Lib Dem candidate took the seat by 1,872 votes, overturning the former Tory's 23,000 majority at last year's General Election.

The by-election was called after Mr Goldsmith quit as a Conservative MP in protest over plans to build a new runway at Heathrow airport.

But the race was dominated by Brexit, which put Mr Goldsmith, who backed Brexit, at a disadvantage against Mrs Olney, a Remainer.
