Do you know what the Commonwealth is?

London Live’s Alex Beard was out earlier today discovering how much Londoners actually know about the Commonwealth. 

To say there were a range of answers would be an understatement…

 

How relevant is the Commonwealth in the modern world?

The future of the Commonwealth is also about values and empowering young people, according to one spokesman. 

Lewis Brooks, of the Royal Commonwealth Society, said the organisation is no longer based on its colonial past and highlighted new countries joining the Commonwealth such as Rwanda.

 

Homosexuality still criminal offence in majority of Commonwealth nations

Of the 53 countries that make up the Commonwealth, 42 criminalise homosexuality.

Mable Mary Nalule, who fled Uganda after she was arrested for being a lesbian, said the Commonwealth needs to do more to protect LGBT rights.

The vice chair of the Out & Proud Diamond Group, which campaigns for the LGBT rights in Commonwealth countries, is now a refugee in the UK. 

 

New generation to change Commonwealth

A new generation looks set to change the future of the Commonwealth, according to a member of its youth council. 

Messeh Leone, who sits on the Commonwealth Youth Council, said young people will be driving the agenda forward.

 

'Moving in the Commonwealth changed my life'

Navneet Bali said having the freedom to migrate within the Commonwealth changed his life. 

He moved from India to the UK with this family in 1985 and shared his story with Headline London.
