London Live's guide to the 2014 Local Elections

Seats in 32 boroughs have been contested for the first time in four years as votes are being counted and verified for more than 1,800 local council seats in London. 
Voters had their say at the ballot box yesterday. Ballots have also been cast for the mayoral elections taking place in Hackney, Lewisham, Newham and Tower Hamlets.

Like Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea has been a Conservative stronghold since 1974

ISLINGTON - Labour HOLD

Final Islington Council result: 47 Labour councillors and 1 Green councillor.

BROMLEY - Conservative HOLD

Based on results so far the Conservatives have held Bromley with 37 of 60 councillors.

SOUTHWARK - Labour HOLD

Results are still being declared, with Labour taking 40 of Southwark's 63 seats and the Liberal Democrats taking 11 so far.

HOUNSLOW - Labour HOLD

Results are being declared. Labour 36 seats, Conservatives 3 seats.

HILLINGDON - Conservative HOLD

Conservatives have held power by taking 42 of the 65 seats up for election. The party has had control of the council since 2006.

Official declaration still pending as one ward still to declare but Labour hold the borough.

KINGSTON – Con GAIN
 
Tories gained overall control of Kingston-upon-Thames Borough from Liberal Democrats although a final result will not be known until Sunday after recounts in one three-seat ward.
They have already won 28 of the council's 48 seats with Liberal Democrats on 17 so far.
The recounts are in Norbiton ward.

​​BARNET – postponed

The election in the council’s Colindale ward has been postponed after the death of a candidate.
The existing councillors for the ward are from Labour which is targeting the borough as a possible control gain.
 Results are due later today.

WALTHAM FOREST – Labour HOLD
 
Labour have held power by taking 32 of the 60 contested seats in the east London borough. Conservative have 10 elected councillors while Lib Dems have lost five seats with Cann Hall to call.
Liberal Democrat leader Bob Sullivan lost his Leyton seat after holding it for 32 years.

 NEWHAM 

Sir Robin Wales has returned for his fourth term in office as the Mayor of Newham.
He  recorded 61.18% of valid first preference votes as 47,095 of Newham’s eligible electors turned out to vote yesterday.
In his acceptance speech from the election count at Lee Valley VeloPark’s velodrome in Queen Elizabeth Park he said: “We fought this election on a positive vision of the future and our record of success including helping 20,000 residents into work, profiding free school meals for every primary child and freezing Council Tax for six years in a row.
 
“I want to thank the people of Newham for putting their trust in me to be their Mayor for the next four years.”

BRENT – Labour HOLD

Labour has held ontoBrent in north west London taking home the majority of the 63 seats in 21 wards.
 
The party has had control of the council on and off since 1974 with some periods where there has been no overall majority.

BEXLEY - Con HOLD
Another borough has been held by the Conservatives despite losing seven seats. The party took the majority in Bexley with 45 seats. Labour gained four taking 15 in total while Ukip took three for the first time in the borough.

RICHMOND UPON THAMES Con HOLD
The Conservative party have held onto power in west London. It gained 10 seats with the Lib Dems losing 9 and Ukip losing 1. 
Conservative councillors will hold 39 seats with Lib Dem councillors holding 15.

CROYDON Lab GAIN

Labour fourth gain in London taking Croydon from a Conservative majority for the first time since 2006. 

There were 70 seats contested.

REDBRIDGE
Labour have gained nine seats taking the majority in Redbridge - the party’s third gain in London. 
Labour councillors gained 35 seats. Tories took home 25 seats losing five and the Lib Dems took three losing four.There has been no overall control in the east London borough since 2006.

Four more seats left to declare - but Conservative are holding the majority.

BEXLEY
Ukip has had its first councillor elected so far - Cllr Mac McGannon has been elected to a seat in Colyers ward with 14 per cent of the votes. Cllr Brian John Bishop, Con, took the majority with 16 per cent followed by Cllr Maxine Patricia Fothergill with 14 per cent.

RICHMOND - Con HOLD

The Conservatives have managed to hold onto their second seat so far in London by taking the majority in Richmond Upon Thames. With 54 seats up for grabs, the council has flip-flopped between a Lib Dem and Tory majority for the last three elections.

SUTTON - Liberal Democrat HOLD
The Lib Dems managed to take the majority of 54 seats in this borough, which is one of their strong holds. The party have ruled as a majority since 1990.

MERTON - Labour GAIN
Labour was certain to take overall control of the south London borough after 48 of the 60 seats were declared, having won 33. 
The party has only every rules in a minority administration as there has been no overall control of the council. This is the second gain for the Labour party after Hammersmith and Fulham.

HAMMERSMITH AND FULHAM - Labour GAIN
Labour stormed to a victory in this Tory ‘flagship council’ by gaining 11 seats. 
Final result - Labour 26, Conservative 20. The Conservative party have held this borough since 2006.

HARINGEY - Labour HOLD

The Labour party have held onto the majority of the 57 seats which were up for up for grabs in one of their safest seats in London. 
The borough has had a Labour led council since 1974.

 ENFIELD - Labour HOLD

54 seats were contested. Labour saw 37 councillors elected while the Conservative party saw 17.

 WANDSWORTH - Conservative HOLD
60 seats in total were contested.
Election results saw 41 Conservative councillors elected along with 19 from the Labour Party.  Labour gained six seats compared to 2010.
