Grandfather has asked Peter, who he calls “Goat General”, to take Heidi with him for the day. Peter is not happy about this decision but doesn’t have much of a choice. So Heidi spends her first day in the mountains with Peter, who is still not talking to her, not very happy at having to take care of the “town girl”.
Orphan girl Heidi is sent to live with her grandfather in the alps under the false promise that she would eventually return to her aunt, who in actual fact cannot care for her anymore. She's excited for her trip, but is surprised to learn that her people who know her grandfather don't think much of him. He's a hermit with a bad temper, and there are all kinds of nasty rumors about the man floating around in the nearest village. Heidi is happy to give him the benefit of the doubt, however, even if his reluctance to accept her into his home couldn't be more obvious.
