Oscar Pistorius sentenced to five years in prison
21st October 2014

A seven month trial came to a close today, as Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to five years in prison after shooting dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day last year.

The South African Olympic Paralympic sprinter was given five years imprisonment and a three year suspended sentence for unlawful discharge of a firearm.

Judge Thokozile Masipa suggested that a tougher sentence would seem too soft, however any less time in prison would induce that the justice system favoured the famous.

She added: “The decision was mine and mine alone.”

To discuss his trial and the sentencing is Tom Peck from the Independent.
