Why? What’s Happening For The Young?
23rd October 2014

Did you know that there is a United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child?

It is a set of human rights of everyone under the age of 18.

The Southbank Centre intends to use this piece of legislature as inspiration for their new festival, Why? What’s Happening For The Young?

Across this weekend they will be asking the questions like, what rights do children really have today? And how do we champion children’s rights?

There will be talks with Camila Batmanghelidjh, founder and director of Kids Company and Lucie Russell, Director of Campaigns and Media at Young Minds and co-founder of The Big Issue in 1991.

It starts today with a protest along the South Bank and will carry on throughout this weekend.

The festival programmer, Shan Maclennan tells Headline London why it’s an important issue today.

The Not The One Show panel give their take on the festival and discuss whether it is inappropriate for children to take part in any protest, or whether it empowers them.

Tonight, the panel were: Baylen Leonard, broadcaster and country music specialist, journalist and broadcaster Belle Lupton and Jay Foreman, musician and comedian.
