Coronation Street’s Anne Kirkbride dies aged 60

The Coronation Street actress Anne Kirkbride, who played Deirdre Barlow, for the last 42 years in the television soap has died at the age of 60.

Tributes from her fellow co-stars and friends flooded in after the news was confirmed at 9pm last night.

The actress passed away in a hospital in Manchester after being admitted after a short illness.

The ITV actress had not been seen in the long-running programme since October, sparking rumours of ill health.

She joined the soap when she was 18-years-old and during her time we saw Deirdre  marry Ken Barlow and serve a stint in prison - triggering a real-life campaign to ‘Free Deirdre’ - which was even backed by the Prime Minister at the time, Tony Blair.

Journalist Bobby Friedman joined Wake Up London talk about why she was such an admired actress.
