London architect David Adjaye to design UK Holocaust Memorial

British architect Sir David Adjaye OBE has been named the winner of a competition to design a new UK Holocaust memorial.

The Londoner, who has planned homes for the late Alexander McQueen and actor Ewan McGregor, beat nine other international firms for the commission.

He'll will work with an Israeli artist to create the monument and education centre, which will stand in Victoria Tower Gardens next to the Houses of Parliament.

There has been some opposition to the design, with local residents objecting to its location. The Imperial War Museum has also called for the learning centre plan to be reconsidered, claiming it would compete with its own Holocaust galleries.

The project is expected to be completed by 2021.
