South Hampstead teacher is shortlisted for World's Best Teacher award

Three British teachers have been shortlisted for the "world's best teacher" award, in which the winner will take home a huge cash prize.

One of those is Emma Russo, a physics teacher from London - who teaches at the all-girls South Hampstead High School, and uses techniques including virtual reality headsets to encourage her students to share her passion for science.

Appalled to discover that only 9% of engineers in the UK are female and disappointed at the low uptake of physics A-level among girls, Russo set out to inspire her students to pursue science, even setting up Skype calls with Cern scientists to bolster her students' interest and confidence.

She also initiated Girls in Physics, a termly event for female students to meet and listen to the experiences of female researchers and professionals in physics or engineering.
