As winter is approaching, Grandfather and Heidi go to the village to get supplies for the cold season. As she stops at Peter’s place, Heidi realises that Grandmother’s favourite thing is fresh bread. But the old woman can’t afford to buy some every day so Heidi promises Grandmother to bring some back.
Orphan girl Heidi is sent to live with her grandfather in the alps under the false promise that she would eventually return to her aunt, who in actual fact cannot care for her anymore. She's excited for her trip, but is surprised to learn that her people who know her grandfather don't think much of him. He's a hermit with a bad temper, and there are all kinds of nasty rumors about the man floating around in the nearest village. Heidi is happy to give him the benefit of the doubt, however, even if his reluctance to accept her into his home couldn't be more obvious.
