Winter has arrived and now Heidi is stuck in the cabin. She asks Grandfather to go to the village to see Peter after school. Grandfather agrees and she goes down to the village on Grandfather’s sled.
Orphan girl Heidi is sent to live with her grandfather in the alps under the false promise that she would eventually return to her aunt, who in actual fact cannot care for her anymore. She's excited for her trip, but is surprised to learn that her people who know her grandfather don't think much of him. He's a hermit with a bad temper, and there are all kinds of nasty rumors about the man floating around in the nearest village. Heidi is happy to give him the benefit of the doubt, however, even if his reluctance to accept her into his home couldn't be more obvious.
