National Youth Orchestra begins 2025 tour in London

A new year has seen a new selection of talented young musicians taking part in National Youth Orchestra.

Over the next month, teenage musicians from across the UK will play their part – both as performers and as role models – starting with a concert at Barbican Hall tomorrow.

As part of the ‘Illuminate’ tour, the 160-piece Orchestra will perform Ravel’s Boléro, Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s Catamorphosis, and Nielsen’s Symphony No. 4.

Helena Wadia spoke to two young musicians from the orchestra, Kieran and Smera, about the upcoming London show, and why it’s important to break down barriers to young people experiencing the power of live orchestral music.

Tickets to National Youth Orchestra’s Illuminate tour are free for teenagers.
