Memoir details female officer’s time working in one of London’s most notorious male prisons

Just three months after leaving university, Gen Glaister began work in one of London’s largest male prisons.

An unusual career choice, she admits, but one that she had had her heart set on even as a teenager.

There, she was forced to navigate the the world of inmates as a prison guard, witness ever-growing drug problems, a mental health system on the brink of collapse and a team of officers that had already given up.

Working amongst gangsters, murderers and traffickers, she decided to write a book about her experiences – as well as many of the surprisingly sweet, vulnerable and unexpected moments that often occur in prison.

The Prison Officer is available to buy now.
